Parijaat Plant, Harshringaar, Night Flowering Jasmine (in polybag) - Spiritual Gift Plant

Scientific Name- Nyctanthes Arbor-Tristis

Height:         1.5 Feet ( + 20% variation )

COMMON NAMES-    Parijat, Harshringar, Indian Night Jasmine, Tree of Sorrow, Kalpvriksha, Divine Tree,  Hengra Bubar or Shiuli.

The scientific name arbor-tristis also means ‘Sad Tree’.  This is fast growing plant and blooms fragrant white flowers (with orange-red centre). Leaves of this sun loving plant are rough. If you wish to make it grow in a dense form (like a bush) with various branches, keep on pruning accordingly. But if wish to grow it like a tall tree, continue pruning lower side branches, so that it grow vertically without growing side branches. It can attain height upto 30 feet. It's a long life plant.

We can also grow this plant in balcony with direct sunlight of 04 hours. This plant can grow in diffused sunlight also, but blooming will reduce. Blooming is maximum during winter and spring season. The plant performs best in big size containers (10 inch or more) or plant them on ground.

This plant has important religious value in Hindu Mythology and is also regarded as Kalpvriksha. Apart from this, Parijat plant is highly useful as medicinal plant. The tree is sometimes called the ‘Tree of Sorrow’, because the flowers fell off from tree during daytime. As per one story in Mahabharat and the Vishnu Purana, Parijat appeared as the result of the Samudra Manthan (churning of ocean) and God Krishna battled with God Indra to win Parijat. His wife Satyabhama demanded the tree to be planted in the backyard of her palace. In spite of having the tree in her backyard, the flowers used to fall in the adjacent backyard of the other queen Rukmini, who was favourite of God Krishna Ji, because of her superior devotion and humility. Watering & Sunlight:   This plant is almost maintenance free. Even without fertilisers, this plant will show satisfactory growth. However, use of vermi-compost shows faster growth and more blooming. Even with low level of atmospheric humidity (20%) and high temperature (upto 45⁰ C), this plant continues to grow healthily. Its leaves may suffer temporary damage during cold weather, (need not to worry). After completion of cold season, leaves will revive. We should water it whenever soil has become fully dry. Drainage in pot is necessary by making sufficient holes in bottom.

Soil:     To make the ideal potting mix, 20 % drainage media (river sand/ Leca/ Perlite/ Pumice or rice husk- use any one of them) in potting mix should be available. In rest of the potting mix, we should mix vermi compost (20 %) and sterilised garden soil (75%). Use of Neem Cake (5%) will improve quality of potting mix.

Use : This plant is widely used in landscaping and as a single plant in big pot.

Spiritual Use: This plant is very important in Hinduism.
