This is a grafted Adenium. Due to skilful grafting of this plant, you will see more flowers even at small height. After attaining maturity, Its caudex looks like bonsai. Every plant lover likes to grow adenium obesum due to its beautiful deep red, yellow, purple or pure white flowers (as per variety). Its flower colour varieties are more than 100. These are usually grown from seed. It can grow faster in full sunlight with less water. Bloom time is for full year (except frost, extreme cold). Blooming is maximum during summer season. This plant is sun loving and can grow upto height of 6 feet. It's a long life plant and can survive upto 25-30 years. The plant performs best in big size containers (6 inch or more).
This plant is almost maintenance free. Even without fertilisers, this plant will show satisfactory growth. However, use of fertiliser shows faster growth and more blooming. Flower colour (as shown in image) may vary partially due to different climatic conditions and nutritional availability.
Sunlight: This plant likes maximum sunlight. The plant can grow in diffused sunlight also, but blooming will reduce. If atmospheric temperature is more than 350C, we should shift it to shady areas. Otherwise, its leaves may suffer from temporary sun burn. After summer season, plant will regain its vibrant look with new leaves. During frost (extreme winter, if temperature is less than 150C,), its leaves may shed and it will revive, when winter is over.
Watering: We should water it after a gap of 2-3 days during summer season, or whenever soil has become fully dry. This plant is similar to Cactus and hates over watering. Continuous moisture in soil will damage its root and its roots may rot. We should regularly check its caudex (lower swollen portion of stem). If it has become very soft, the plant is about to die due to over watering. In such case, we should immediately stop watering the plant and take out the plant from soil. If required, we can remove the infected part of plant by knife. Dip the root zone of plant in fungicide solution for 15 minutes. Allow the plant to dry for a week. After that re-pot the plant, followed by less watering. During extreme cold, give very less water and try to protect from cold, by placing under shed.
If we don't water it for 2 -3 weeks, it can survive. But leaves may suffer temporary damage. Even with low level of atmospheric humidity (20% ), this plant continues to grow healthily. Drainage in pot is necessary by making sufficient holes in bottom.
Ideal Soil : 25 % drainage media - (coarse river sand/ Leca/ Perlite/ Pumice or rice husk- use any two of them, Coarse river sand & Leca recommended)
25% Cocopeat / coconut husk chips (helps in aeration, excessive water drainage, fungal attack protection & needful moisture retention)
25% vermicompost
15% wood Charcoal
10% mix of Fungicide, bonemeal, Elementary sulphur powder, Castor cake powder in equal ratio.
Use : This plant is widely used in landscaping and terrace gardening.
Plantation procedure: After receiving the plants, bare rooted Adenium should be potted in appropriate soil media and place that in area with diffused sunlight (indirect sunlight). Water that plant thoroughly. After a gap of 2-3 days, whenever soil becomes slightly dry, water again. After 2-3 weeks new leaves will appear on the plant. You can gradually increase the direct sunlight availability to the plant by needful shifting. Kindly do not shift to direct sunlight for full day at once. After 6-7 weeks, your plants’ roots will be fully developed to tolerate direct sunlight for full day. You should increase sun exposure to plants gradually, otherwise they may be adversely affected.
